More than one dozen Allan Hancock and Cuesta College baseball players have earned All-Western State Conference honors. Cuesta starting pitcher and San Luis Obispo High graduate David Murillo was named Pitcher of the Division. The right hander went 4-2 in 8 starts with a 3.04 ERA. He struck out 42 in 56 1/3 innings.
Murillo was one of four Cuesta players named to the First Team. Catcher Michael Nieporte, a San Luis Obispo High graduate, shortstop Josh Miller and outfielder Cody Lavalli earned First Team accolades.
Cuesta infielders Chris Lindmark and Alex Detz, outfielder LaBronze Sanderson and designated hitter Spencer Ruggles were named to the Second Team. Detz also earned the Gold Glove as the conference's top defensive second baseman.
Nine Bulldogs earned postseason accolades. River Stevens and St. Joseph High graduate Jacob Cano, Righetti High graduate Taylor Mowatt, Lompoc High grad Ryan Bower and Nipomo High graduate Joe Delfin were named to the First Team. Infielder Mike Foley and Joe Perez were Second Team picks. Outfielder Andrew Clark and third baseman Chris Hernandez, an Arroyo Grande High graduate, earned Gold Gloves.
Stevens led the conference with a .423 batting average. Lavalli ranked sixth with a .377 clip, tied for second with 4 home runs and ranked third with 23 RBI. Cano finished second in the league with 25 RBI.
Cuesta is about to make its 17th-consecutive postseason appearance. The Cougars, who finished in a three way tie for first place, finished the season 23-13 overall. Cuesta is the 6th seed in the Southern California Regional. The Cougars open a best-of-three game series Saturday at home against 11th seeded Cypress.
