BARSTOW, Calif. (AP) - Prosecutors have made opening statements in the trial of a Barstow couple accused of killing their 3-year-old nephew in 1995 over a slice of pizza.
The Victorville Daily Press reports (http://www.vvdailypress.com/ ) 3-year-old Tycoon Graves and a sibling were refused any pizza as a punishment by their aunt Duree Pettress and uncle Lafayette Pettress.
Prosecutors say the little boy was caught sneaking a piece early the next morning, causing his aunt to begin "stomping" him. The boy later died from internal injuries.
Prosecutors say the couple forced the boy's 9-year-old sister to take the blame.
Another sister who was 6 at the time came forward in 2011 to accuse the couple.
Attorneys for the defendants both said their clients were innocent.
If convicted, they face 25 years to life in prison.
