The Blues scored early and Will Cox made the runs hold up as San Luis Obispo blanked Santa Barbara 2-0 Thursday at UCSB to reclaim first place in the California Collegiate League.
The Blues improved to 8-3 in league and 13-5 overall. The defending national champion Foresters fell to 6-3 in league and 11-7 overall.
The two rivals shared the league crown last year.
Cox, a Mississippi State right-hander, limited the Foresters to 3 hits in 8 shutout innings to improve to 2-0 on the summer. The sophomore struck out 5 and walked 2. Daniel Mengden pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his fifth save of the summer.
The Blues, who lost 1-0 in 10 innings on Wednesday, scored the only runs of the game Thursday in the second inning. Austin Grisham hit a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. After Cody Dufrene walked, Austin Christensen hit a sacrifice fly to score Grisham. Dufrene moved to second on a balk and scored on a basehit by Nick Flair and an error on the shortstop.
The Blues registered six hits to the Foresters four. Grisham and Will Maddox each collected two hits for the Blues.
The Blues return home to host a three game league series with the MLB Academy Barons. Friday and Saturday's games in Sinsheimer Stadium start at 6pm. Sunday's series finale is at 1pm.
