Despite losing eight of its last twelve games, the Cuesta College baseball team is going into the postseason with confidence. The Cougars will be making their 17th consecutive Regional Playoffs appearance.
"I'm definitely pumped. The whole team is pumped and is looking forward to moving on and hopefully getting on a winning streak," said David Murillo. The San Luis Obispo High graduate was named the WSC Pitcher of the Year. He's slated to start the series opener on Saturday.
"It was a little rocky but we got to the playoffs and that's all that matters. We're feeling good. We're excited to have the opportunity to be hosts," added second baseman Alex Detz. The Mission Prep graduate recently signed with Mississippi State.
The Western State Conference co-champion Cougars open a regional series with Cypress on Saturday at 1pm. It is a best of three series with game two scheduled for Sunday at 11am and a third game, if necessary, is at 3 pm.
Cuesta finished the regular season 23-13. Cypress finished 22-14. The Cougars lost to Cypress 2-0 earlier in the season during a spring tournament.
The Cougars say this is a brand new season and they like their chances to make a run at a state title. "We're capable of playing at a high level. It starts with pitching and if we get the good pitching and back that up with defense I believe we'll be in a good position," said head coach Bob Miller.
The winner advances to next week's Super Regional. The Cougars have advanced to a Super Regional in four of the last nine years.
