Cuesta College students win first place in welding competition

Cuesta College is celebrating a welding win. Four of their students took home the title for top welding fabrication team in a competition in Arizona. The competition included students from high schools and community colleges in California and Arizona.

John Fiscalini, Simon Rowe, Kyle Peterson, and Steven Cox were put to the test to see if they could build a home barbecue and then cook a meal with it. They had just over eight hours to put the barbecue together. In their working area, temperatures approached the triple digits, making the competition difficult.

Still, they were able to pull off the win and stand out to judges. Cuesta's team was one of the only teams that was able to complete the project, and they didn't stop there. They also customized their barbecue wtih a Cuesta Welding name plate, a polished silver metal bear cutout, and a star. Judges and instructors said they had never seen such flawless welding.

In the cooking competition, Cuesta took third place. According to the instructors for the Cuesta team, several of the Cuesta students received job offers, and all of them took home welding gear prizes.
