Cuesta College announced Thursday that its Emeritus Program is switching from providing free classes to area senior citizens, to fee-based classes. It says reduced funding caused by California's economic crisis is to blame.
The fees will vary by class. There are 49 courses affected, ranging from painting to computer skills. All will require a fee by the 2010 summer semester. To help students adjust, some instructors have agreed to teach classes pro bono in the meantime.
The college's Community Programs Department is also working on a privately-funded scholarship program for seniors who can't afford the classes.
