Second place Moorpark scored seven first inning runs against first place Cuesta and the Raiders held on to win 9-7 in San Luis Obispo on Tuesday. The Cougars were down 8-1 in the bottom of the seventh before they rallied for six runs to pull within 8-7. Moorpark scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth to make it 9-7. In the bottom of the ninth, Cuesta loaded the bases with one out but Brandon Oliver struck out and then LaBronze Sanderson grounded out to end the game.
Cuesta closer Brett Haringa started for the Cougars and allowed seven runs in 2/3 of an inning. Steven Nagy came on in relief and pitched 7 1/3 innings, only allowing one, un-earned run.
Moorpark committed five errors but had 14 hits. Cuesta had 10 hits and committed two errors.
The Cougars are now 10-5 in the Western State Conference and 21-10 overall. Moorpark improves to 10-5 in the conference. The two teams will break the tie for first place when they play again on Thursday in Moorpark.
