The Cuesta College softball team hung tight for six innings with 14th ranked Ventura on Thursday. But the Western State Conference-leading Pirates hit a grand slam in the top of the seventh to seal an 8-1 victory.
The Cougars fell to 5-11 in conference and 9-26 overall. The Pirates improved to 31-6 overall and 16-2 in league.
Arroyo Grande High graduate Danika Gaslan took the loss and fell to 6-11 on the season. The Cuesta freshman allowed 12 hits, 8 runs and 2 home runs in 7 innings. Ventura out-hit Cuesta 12-6.
Ventura led from start to finish because Clarissa Samaniego crushed the second pitch of the game for a solo home run. She had three hits in the game. Julie Cortez clubbed a grand slam in the seventh to put it away.
Cuesta's Sara Hoversten led the Cougars attack. She collected two hits and drove in the only run of the game.
The Cougars close out the home portion of the schedule next Tuesday against Oxnard.
