The Cuesta College women's basketball team clinched its first playoff berth in five years with a come-from-behind 54-52 win over Santa Barbara City College on Wednesday night.
The Cougars trailed late but took the lead for good on two free throws from Morro Bay High graduate Aria Johnson in the final seconds. Miriam Zabinsky led the Cougars with 18 points. Johnson finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.
The Cougars improved to 6-2 in Western State Conference play and 18-9 overall. They play at last place Hancock on Saturday at 7pm with a showdown against first place and 7-1 Ventura set for next week.
The Cuesta men defeated the Vaqueros 87-83 to improve to 4-4 in league and 17-12 overall. Oscar Pedroso led the Cougars with 21 points and 11 rebounds. The Cougars play at first place Hancock on Saturday at 5pm looking to keep their playoff chances alive.
The Hancock men won at Ventura 76-71 on Wednesday. The Bulldogs led 33-26 at the half. Demetrius Thomas led four Hancock players in double figures with 18 points. Khufu Najee and Devonne Nolan added 15 points apiece.
The Bulldogs have now won five in a row and improved to 7-1 in WSC play and 20-7 overall. It marks the second year in a row Ralph Gorton has coached his squad to the 20 win mark.
