Five players scored in double-digits as the Cuesta College women's basketball team cruised to a 87-42 conference win over rival Allan Hancock on Wednesday. The Hancock men evened the series with a 115-102 win over the Cougars in a battle of ranked teams.
The Lady Cougars improved to 3-1 in Western State Conference play and bounced back from a tough loss at first place Santa Barbara City College. Courtney Chadwick led the Cougars with 22 points. Cuesta is now 15-8 on the year, while the Bulldogs fell to 0-4 in league and 4-16 on the season.
Morro Bay High graduate Aria Johnson, who's the reigning State Female Athlete of the Month, added 19 points, while Miriam Zabinsky scored 17 for Cuesta.
The Lady Cougars started the week ranked 14th in the Southern California Regional Coaches Poll.
The Hancock men, ranked 12th this week, outlasted the 15th ranked Cougars behind 35 points and 11 rebounds from Demetrius Thomas. Oscar Pedroso led the Cougars with 31 points and 10 boards in the loss.
Cuesta is now 2-2 in league and 15-10 overall. The Bulldogs are now 3-1 in league and 16-7 on the year.
Khufu Najee added 21 points for Hancock, while Junior Anderon and Anthony Trepagnier had 14 each.
Kenneth Robinson added 18 points for the Cougars to go with 7 assists. Mohammed Ali Ben Ammar scored 14 as well for Cuesta, which is now in fourth place in the standings.
Earlier in the day, Hancock College announced the men's basketball team was a bigger winner off the court as well. The team has a cumulative grade point average of 3.44 with five players earning 4.0 GPA's in the fall semester.
