Cuesta wrestling loses to two-time defending state champion Fresno City

Jonathan Urango, Spaso Illich and Righetti High graduate Matthew Correa won their matches, but the Cuesta College wrestling team lost to two-time defending State Champion Fresno City 34-10 on Wednesday night in the Cougars' only home meet of the season.

The Cougars forfeited two matches (165 and 285 pounds), but the Rams won five of the eight contested matches.

Correa, a 2011 State Place Winner, won at 125 pounds 16-10 over Emerson Jimenez to improve to 6-0 on the season. He gave Cuesta an early 3-0 lead. But AJ Valles beat Jake Lincoln 9-3 at 133 pounds, Racelis Cardenas topped Julian Purdy 6-2 at 141 pounds to give the Rams the lead. Cuesta's 149 pounder Illich defeated Spencer Hill 16-12 to even the match. But Fresno City won five of the next six weight divisions.

Morro Bay High graduate Dolin Mininni wrestled at 157 pounds for the Cougars. He lost 14-1 to Brady Bersano.

Urango delivered a major decision at 174 for the Cougars. He beat Kevin Corbett 18-9.

The Cougars dropped to 0-2 in dual meets. They wrestle in the Bakersfield Dual Tournament this Saturday.
