A Northern California woman is dead after the California Highway Patrol says she lost control of her vehicle just north of San Miguel Thursday night.

Investigators say at about 8:00p.m. Thursday, the 19-year-old Cupertino woman was driving northbound on Highway 101 just north of San Miguel, when she lost control of her vehicle and spun out of control. The driver's side of the vehicle eventually slammed into a steel light pole, near the on ramp from N. Mission St. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her 18-year-old female passenger is from Santa Clara. She was taken to Twin Cities Hospital with moderate injuries. Officers say she complained of abdominal pains.

Officers say the highway was slick from the recent rains, and that high speeds may have played a role in the crash.
