A high-salt diet is associated with high blood pressure.

Researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston tracked the sodium intake of more than 5,500 adults in the Netherlands for more than six years.

They also analyzed urine samples for markers of blood vessel damage.

Those who reported consuming the most salt, and had high indicators of blood vessel damage, were 86% more likely to develop high blood pressure.
