Cuzick strikes out 11 in Nipomo's CIF victory, Morro Bay and Orcutt also win

Behind a dominant performance from Courtney Cuzick and a late offensive outburst, the Nipomo High softball team blanked Immaculate Heart 3-0 in the first round of the CIF Division 5 playoff game on Thursday.

The Titans, who are seeded 4th this season after advancing to the semifinals last year, improved to 19-4.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning. Marisa Rodriguez singled and stole second bsae to lead off the frame. Ashley Ruiz cracked a double to score Rodriguez with the first run of the game. Gianna Abatti singled her home to make it 2-0. Abatti later scored on a RBI single from Candace Fryckman to cap a 3 run inning.

Cuzick, who's headed to Penn, struck out 11 and allowed just 3 hits.

The Titans collected 7 hits in the game. Ruiz led the way with 2 hits, including a RBI double. Five others had one hit each.

Nipomo advances to next Tuesday's second round.

Also on Thursday, Morro Bay won for the second-straight game on the road. The PIrates beat Savanna 5-1 to advance into the second round. The Pirates improved to 12-15 and ended Savanna's record with a 17-9 record.

Orcutt Academy beat Campbell Hall 5-2 on the road in Division 7 play. The 20-4 Spartans won a playoff game for the second time in this week and in school history to move on to the second round.
