Dancers honor ancestors at Obon Festival in Santa Maria

The Annual Obon Festival kicked off Sunday morning in Santa Maria.

The festival focuses on Bon Odori dancing. It's a traditional Japanese folk dance that honors ancestors.

"It's a joyful celebration because now they're at peace," said Dawn Kurokawa-Kamiya, an Obon Festival Member.

The family-friendly event is always free to attend. Sunday's event was held at the Veteran's Memorial Community Center in Santa Maria.

The group practices every Wednesday at the community center.
