Sharon Day is ready to storm out of the blocks in London. The San Luis Obispo resident earned a spot on her second USA Olympic Team with a runner-up finish in the heptathlon at the Olympic Trials last month.
"Any opportunity to represent the United States in international competition, especially when it's the Olympic Games. is definitely an amazing accomplishment for anyone. It feels a little cooler this time since I'm an heptathlete this time. So I did it in seven events instead of just on," said Day.
The former Cal Poly All-American finished 12th in the women's high jump in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Day admitted wet weather dampened her performance in Beijing. Now she knows to expect anything. "I'm a lot more prepared for that now. So whatever it may be if it is rain, or wind or if there's a hurricane even I've competed in that type of weather now and so it won't phase me," said Day.
The 27 year old set a personal best score at the Trials with 6,343 points, which ranks 17th in the world this season. Along the way, she set a new PR in the long jump.
Day has been training non-stop with coach Jack Hoyt ever since the Trials to peak in London. She knows it'll take a new PR to land on the medal podium.
"Definitely above 66-hundred and I think I definitely have that in me. Ya, another 250 points and I'm right there," said Day.
Sharon knows anything is possible. Her roommate at the Beijing Olympics, Stephanie Brown Trafton, another local Olympian, stunned the world and won Gold. "It worked for Stephanie last time. Hopefully maybe we'll room together and both get a medal," joked Day.
The heptathlon opens on August 3 with the first four events. The final three events take place on August 4.
