It's been six days, and hundreds of residents in Atascadero remain without natural gas.
Southern California Gas officials said a water pipe that broke last Sunday near the city's downtown is to blame. The leak spread to a gas line and water got into the pipes. At one point, close to a thousand homes and businesses were affected.
This outage has been frustrating for some, while others are looking at it a bit differently.
"It's day six," said Chris Temple, who has been affected by the outage. "You would be surprised by how much water you can save when the hot water is turned off. My bill is definitely going to be less this month."
Temple and his family have treated the outage like an adventure.
"The Cole stove is set up in the yard, and we have been barbequing," he explained.
The Temples are not alone. Across the street, a mom of three said there are much bigger problems to worry about, but the timing is a little bad.
"It is kind of frustrating because this has taken priority over our week, managing laundry and bathing elsewhere and then not being able to plan for the holiday as much I would normally," said Laura Hasch.
Hasch had to get creative when making cookies for her son's class. They decorated the store bought ones with Peeps and melted white chocolate on top.
"It's an inconvenience, but it's not life threatening," said Hasch.
SoCalGas showed up at the Temple residence Friday afternoon and the gas was turned back on, but hundreds remain without it. SoCalGas said Friday that they project all gas to be restored by late Saturday.
According to SoCalGas, there are no cost projections at this time. As far as businesses and residents being reimbursed, SoCalGas said insurance claims are being filed and an investigation is underway.
