The Arroyo Grande and host Morro Bay boys basketball teams both improved to 2-0 at the annual Harding Invitational Tournament on Friday with thrilling victories. Atascadero battled and nearly overcame a 10 point fourth quarter deficit, but fell to 0-2, while San Luis Obispo evened its mark at 1-1.

The Pirates overcame a second half deficit to beat North Bakersfield 56-53. Xavier Alfaro hit three 3-pointers and led the team with 19 points. It was Elijah Lampley hitting a bucket and converting a free throw with 7 seconds left in the game to break a 53-53 tie. Morro Bay plays Heritage Christian at 8am on Saturday in the final game of pool play.

Robbie Berwick's potential game-winning three-point shot with time running out hit off the back iron as the Greyhounds lost to Independence out of Bakersfield 70-68. Atascadero trailed by 10 points in the fourth quarter, before closing to within one point on a 3-point shot by Berwick. The Hounds fouled the Falcons, who made 1 of 2 free throws to push the lead back up to two with less than ten seconds to play. Berwick finished with 11 points and 6 rebounds. Sophomore Ryan O'Connell led the Hounds with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Junior Joe Johnson ended up with 14 points and 3 steals. He hit several big outside shots in the second half to fuel the comeback.

The Arroyo Grande boys stayed undefeated at the tournament after a 49-39 win over Fallbrook. Matt Willkomm led the Eagles with 13 points, while Brennan Rivera added 9 points and Dylan Bingham poured in 7. The Eagles play Independence in a battle of unbeatens at 9:30 am at Morro Bay High. The winner will likely play in the title game.

Also on Friday, Moorpark beat Paso Robles 72-31 and Heritage Christian edged Santa Maria 71-70. San Luis Obispo beat up on Tamalpais 49-31.
