VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - A teenage girl's family says a Ventura police officer repeatedly sexually assaulted her before killing himself in Oct. 2011.
The Ventura County Star reports (http://bit.ly/YHiZM1 ) the girl's mother has filed a claim against the city for not informing her Officer Ricky Payne was allegedly assaulting the girl, who is now 18.
The claim alleges the assaults took place between June and October 2011, and included intercourse and oral sex.
The girl's attorney Ron Bamieh says the department knew about the assaults and failed to investigate them fully.
Police Chief Ken Corney says the department found out about the allegation hours before Payne's suicide.
Bamieh says Payne met the girl through her stepfather, who works for the department.
If the city denies the claim, Bamieh says the family plans to sue.
