The San Luis Obispo County District Attorney's Office has reached a $3 million settlement, more than two years after the deadly incident on the Lake Nacimiento water project in Paso Robles.
The DA's office reached the settlement with Teichert Construction on Wednesday. Teichert crews were working in a ten foot trench near the intersection of Niblick and South River Roads for the project in October 2008. But on October 2, a water line ruptured, drowning two men.
The settlement includes an injuction, which requires Teichert to create new policies designed to improve it's employees' safety at excavation sites. All of the underground crew employees will be trained on the new policies.
A portion of the $3 million will be paid to San Luis Obispo County. Other portions of the money will go to the City of Paso Robles for reimbursement for its emergency services, as well as to creating a special fund for future worker safety and environmental investigations and prosecutions in San Luis Obispo County.
