Decker loses coaching debut, Tigers drop season opener

Laurie Decker lost her debut as the boys basketball head coach of San Luis Obispo High on Thursday during the opening day of the Harding Invitational Tournament hosted by Morro Bay High School. The Tigers lost 49-46 to Independence out of Bakersfield.
San Luis Obispo fell behind quickly 9-0, but came back to take a 14-11 lead. Independence regained the lead in the second quarter.
The Tigers had the ball in the final minute of the game, but could not overcome the deficit in the end.
David Thoreson led the Tigers with 23 points.
Decker made Central Coast history and became the first woman to coach a varsity boys basketball game for a local school. Previously, she coached girls teams at San Luis Obispo and Nipomo High Schools. Decker was the first two-time Miss Basketball in Minnesota history as a high school star before going on to play at Iowa State.
San Luis Obispo will look to get back on track Friday when it battles Tamalpais at 8pm at SLO High.
