There will be no back-to-back gold medals for Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser. The Beijing Olympic gold medalists lost in two-straight sets to Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo of Italy 21-17 and 21-19 in the round of 16 at the London Olympics on Friday.
Rogers, a Solvang resident, registered 11 of his 29 swings for kills. The UCSB graduate also recorded 13 digs. Prior to the match, he told the media he was playing with a strained hamstring. He showed many signs during the match that it was affecting his play.
The 6-9 Dalhausser, who has been nursing a sore knee and ankle, recorded 10 kills, but just one block.
The Americans tied it 19-19 in the second set, but lost the final two points and were eliminated when Rogers' spike was blocked back into him by the 6-8 Nicolai.
The Americans went 3-0 in pool play and entered the quarterfinals as the #2 seed. However, they were eliminated from medal contention by the 15th seeded team from Italy.
After the match, Rogers confirmed it was his last Olympic run and although he was sad they went out in the round of 16 he was looking forward to spending more time with his family.
He also didn't blame lingering injuries on the outcome. "I don't think they had any issue. It's been a troubling year this year with all of our relative stuff with the blood clots and the knees and everything else. But that had nothing to do with our loss out there. Those guys are a good team they could very well end up with a medal," said Rogers.
