Massive demolition of the old Gottchalks building in Santa Maria will get underway Wednesday. But the destruction process began Tuesday. Bulldozers demolished the main door to the old department store but crews say they'll soon start taking the building down.
Gottchalks closed in 2009 and has been sitting empty in the Santa Maria Town Center for years. Early this month, new owners took over the mall and said a 14-screen movie theater with stadium seating will go in that spot.
