The California Department of Mental Health says it will eliminate more than 600 positions next year in a cost-cutting move, but it's not yet clear how that will affect local employees at Atascadero State Hospital.
On an ASH employee union Facebook page, many employees expressed fear that layoffs would lead to more violent assaults on the hospital campus. Some even organized a survey to ask for budget saving ideas that would save jobs.
"The goal is no layoffs," said Kathy Gaither, the DMH acting chief deputy director. "The numbers at each hospital are still being finalized. In total, DMH is eliminating 600 total positions, 270 of which are currently filled. Employees who are affected may move to other jobs within the department."
