An arrest in rural Atascadero has some people questioning their own safety. Deputies arrested a man they say entered a home, took a shower, and then took off with some stuff from the house, including a handgun.

The incident was reported Wednesday morning but deputies say it happened Tuesday morning at a home in the 12000 block of Salinas Road in Atascadero. The couple living there was not home at the time, but deputies say a door was left unlocked.

When Edgar Beyer and his wife returned home Tuesday morning it took them several hours to realize what happened. Deputies say 25-year-old Jacob Johnson went inside, used the shower, and stole a variety of things, including slippers, clothing, prescription medication and a handgun. Deputies then canvassed the area and found Johnson living in a locked storage trailer on a nearby property, known to house transients in trailers and tents. They say he was wearing some of the missing items and had the handgun.

"He showed me a picture on his digital camera and said 'Are these your pants?' 'And I said, yeah they kind of look like it,'" said Beyer.

However Beyer's son, Reid, is not laughing. He says the whole ordeal is frightening.

"The extent of this, breaking into your house and going through your whole house, taking their keys and everything I'm fearful of their lives you know?" said Reid Beyer.

Edgar Beyer says he has lived in his home for 18 years and has never had a problem. Still he admits it is time to make some changes.

"Now we're going to lock," Beyer said. "We're going to lock the truck, the house, going to lock the barn."

In addition to locking up Beyer says he is also considering installing surveillance cameras around the property.

Johnson was booked on charges of possessing stolen property. Bail is set at $20,000.
