San Luis Obispo native Alex Detz went 2 for 4 to help Mississippi State baseball advance to the College World Series finals for the first time in program history with a 4-1 victory over Oregon State on Friday afternoon.
The Bulldogs improved to 51-18 after they beat the Beavers for the second time in the CWS to eliminate OSU. They play either UCLA or North Carolina in the best-of-three championship round that starts on Monday. Oregon State finished the season 52-13 and went 2-2 in its first CWS appearance since winning back-to-back national titles in 2006-07.
Detz, who starred at both Mission Prep and Cuesta College, extended a two-out rally in the sixth inning with a base hit up the middle. With two runners on, slugger Hunter Renfroe hit a three-run homer off the back wall of the left field bullpen to give the Bulldogs a commanding 4-0 lead. It came off freshman left-hander Andrew Moore, who fell to 14-2.
Detz later doubled in the eighth inning. The junior third baseman it hitting .320 for the season with 42 runs, 74 hits and 31 RBI.
