Officials at Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant reduced output in both Unit 1 and Unit 2 to 24 percent power after high swells affected plant operations.
Large waves increase water pressure on traveling screens that filter ocean water entering the intake system. The swells may also bring an increased amount of debris into the system.
The decrease in power is not unusual for the plant during storms, according to a Diablo spokesperson. The units will return to full power after the storm passes through the area.
