A diesel spill on Highway 101 backed up traffic for miles this afternoon.

It happened around 2:30 p.m. on Highway 101 at El Capitan.

Santa Barbara County fire says a big rig lost one of its front tires, which then flew into the center divider and started a small grass fire.

Crews quickly put out the flames but then they noticed diesel fuel leaking from the truck's fuel tank. They say when the tire came off the truck's wheel, it ruptured the tank.

Around 50 gallons of diesel spilled into the roadway and one lane of northbound traffic was temporarily shut down.
