Dinner ends with woman's throat slashed

A Santa Barbara man is facing charges of attempted murder and making terrorist threats, after police say he cut a woman's throat with a knife then had a stand-off with police.

Santa Barbara Police say Sam Wellington Maphis V, 20, of Santa Barbara, was at a dinner gathering at a home on the 1200 block of Crestline Drive Saturday night with family members. Officers say Maphis approached a 60-year old female guest from behind and cut her throat with a knife. They say he then threatened his uncle and ran away.

The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.

Police tracked Maphis to Elings Park. Officers set up a perimeter, and at 10:15 pm, they say Maphis surrendered.

Police say mental illness may be a factor in this case.

Maphis was booked into County Jail with bail set at $2.5 million.
