Driver arrested for deadly Morro Bay crash pleads not guilty

Man accused in deadly crash pleads not guilty

The driver arrested after a deadly crash in Morro Bay one week ago entered a not guilty plea in San Luis Obispo Superior Court Wednesday.

Michael Kessler is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Ashley Malmen, 27 of Cayucos. Investigators say Kessler was high on drugs when he crashed his car on Highway 1 near Morro Bay. Malmen died at the scene. Investigators say Kessler tried to run away, but was found nearby.

He'll be back in court in early May for a pre-preliminary hearing.
