Driver in deadly crash identified as Cal Poly student

The California Highway Patrol has identified the man killed in a crash east of Santa Maria over the weekend as William Rogers, 24, of Santa Maria.

Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong says Rogers was a wine and viticulture senior.

A passerby saw Rogers' overturned pickup truck on a hill near the intersection of Clark Avenue and Dominion Road at around 7:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Investigators say the crash happened sometime overnight. They say Rogers was driving fast, eastbound on Clark, and failed to stop at the stop sign at Dominion Road. They say the truck went up a dirt embankment and over a fence into a pasture.

Investigators say Rogers was found dead at the scene. They say it's unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
