Driver in deadly Santa Maria crash enters not guilty pleas

A 19-year-old Santa Maria man entered not guilty pleas Monday in connection with the crash that killed Jade Marie Dodson and critically injured her cousin, Robert Carag.

Jade was a passenger in her cousin's car. Jade's 7-year-old sister was also treated for a large cut on her head.

Cristian Carbajal is charged with vehicular manslaughter and other crimes for the deadly crash that happened at Broadway and McCoy in Santa Maria in June.

Police said Carbajal ran a red light when he was driving his truck.

Jade had graduated from Santa Maria High School two weeks earlier where she was known as a standout student and a star player on the Lady Saints tennis team. She was eighteen years old.

Michael Clayton, an attorney for Carbajal, told KSBY, " This is a sad case, a terrible, horrible accident. We feel for the families and their loved ones."
