We're learning more about the moments leading up to a deadly crash that happened on Highway 154 near Windy Gap Thursday morning.
The California Highway Patrol says 38-year-old Malibu resident Bert Berrera was driving his pick-up truck westbound on Highway 154 at about midnight, when he swerved to avoid some rocks that had fallen into the roadway. But in doing so, he hit a large rock that was hidden in some brush on the side of the road. That caused Berrera to lose control of the vehicle. His vehicle crashed into a hillside, flipped and landed on its roof. The severity of the damage to the pick-up truck left Berrera's 45-year-old male passenger dead. Berrera suffered minor injuries as a result of the accident.
The CHP says the pair was on their way to the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez from Malibu. Officers say it appears alcohol did not play a role in the crash.
The name of the victim is not being released until that man's family is notified. However, we do know that he is also a resident of Malibu.
