The California Highway Patrol says the driver of the truck that hit and killed one person was under the influence of drugs.

The CHP says two vehicles were stoped at a construction zone when the driver of a pickup truck, Jerad Cross, 31, of Bakersfield failed to stop and slammed into them.

The crash happened on Highway 46 outside of Paso Robles Tuesday morning.

The CHP says the construction worker tried to get the diver's attention but failed. The crash involved three cars. The car in the middle was driven by Richard Gamez, 45, of Clovis. He died at the scene.

A total of four people were involved. Both lanes of the highway were closed while the accident was cleared.
