SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Officials have stopped all drug testing at San Francisco's police crime lab as they investigate allegations that a technician stole cocaine.

Police Chief George Gascon announced the investigation Tuesday night, and said he believes the alleged theft is limited to one employee. He said an external review will begin in a few days.

Gascon said officials discovered the evidence was missing during a lab audit in December. He said other technicians suspected someone was stealing evidence and noticed evidence tampering.

San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris said at least 20 cases could be dismissed immediately because of the shutdown, but evidence in the cases will be retested at labs in other counties or the federal Drug Enforcement Agency.
