The Santa Maria Police Department will be holding a sobriety and driver's license checkpoint tomorrow, Feb. 19, from 6:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. Drivers will be detained momentarily while an officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint. Each driver stopped will be checked.
The checkpoint will be placed on a road that the police department has identified as having a large number of DUI drivers.
Driving while under the influence kills 17,000 people nationally each year, and one in three Americans will be affected by the crime in their lifetime.
