After scoring 25 goals this past season and assisting 15 more for the Earwigs, recent Dunn High graduate Abu Danladi is among six nominee's for the prestigious Gatorade National Male Athlete of the Year award, which will be awarded on July 15 in Hollywood.
The awards ceremony is emceed by ESPN anchor Hannah Storm and leads up to the annual ESPY awards, happening on July 16. Milwaukee Bucks' guard Brandon Knight and former soccer player Mia Hamm will present the honors.
"Getting invited to the ESPY's is like really big," Danladi said. "It's something that I could never even have dreamed of. I'm really proud of what I've done. I know I have my own goals, work as hard as I can and make sure my experience at UCLA is going to be something that I'll remember for the rest of my life."
Danladi will continue his career this fall, playing NCAA Division I soccer for the Bruins. He finished his high school career by winning the Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year award in May.
A committee of sportswriters and commentators select 12 of the best high school athletes across the nation, both on and off the field, to be in the running for the Male and Female Athlete of the Year Awards. Danladi scored at least one goal in every game he played this past season for Dunn High and led the Earwigs to the CIF Southern Section Division VI tournament. Danladi also maintained a 3.0 GPA throughout high school and volunteers for a number of local organizations.
