Former Morro Bay High standout Dylan Royer has gone from a walk-on with the Cal Poly basketball team to a full scholarship player.
Head coach Joe Callero has awarded Royer a full scholarship next year with the Mustangs. He praised his sharp shooter on his Twitter page late Monday night. "Congrats to Senior walk on Dylan Royer for earning a full scholarship for next year..all his hard work has paid off!"
Royer made 21 starts his junior year with the Mustangs and played in all 32 games. The Morro Bay High graduate led the Big West Conference in three-point shooting by hitting 71 of his 152 shots from beyond the arc for a .467 clip. He would have ranked fifth in Division I if he had met the minimum number of buckets per game to qualify. Royer averaged 21.7 minutes and 7.7 points per game.
His first two years on the Mustangs, Royer played in 28 games for a total of 100 minutes. He scored a total of 41 points.
Also on Tuesday, coach Callero provided a glimpse of the Mustangs' 2012-13 schedule. Cal Poly will play at UCLA on Sunday, November 25. The Bruins, who are coached by South Coast native Ben Howland, just signed what many considered the nation's top recruiting class. The complete schedule will be released in a few months.
