The digital world is slowly taking over, as more and more e-readers take the place of actual books. The trend is on the rise.

According to a survey by the Pew Internet Research Center, only 67-percent of Americans are reading traditional books. Those owning an e-book device or tablet jumped from 18-percent to 33-percent in the last year. Also, more Americans are aware that libraries offer digital checkouts.

The San Luis Obispo City-County Library said e-book checkouts have tripled in the last year.

"On trips, you don't have to pile books in the back, and you can just have your Kindle with you, so you can just read there," said third-grade student Zayde Valle.

Valle was at the SLO City-County Library on Thursday, checking out books onto his new e-reader which he just received for Christmas.

But, the library said not every book is available digitally, so one will still have to get out to the library and check one out the old fashioned way.
