The Santa Maria City Council unanimously voted Tuesday night to approve the use of the E-Verify program. It will be used for hiring city employees. E-Verify is a federal program designed to help employers determine whether prospective employees are legally entitled to work in the U.S.
The program will be used in Santa Maria on a six month trial basis and could be implemented as soon as May 8th. At least one California city has already required the use of E-Verify. The city of Lancaster will begin using the service on January 1st.
