Eagles beat Hounds 3-1, clinch share of Pac 7 title and #1 seed for CIF

Kyle Brown struck out 9 in a complete game and his defense made some big plays behind him in Arroyo Grande High baseball's 3-1 win over Atascadero in both team's league finales on Friday.

With the win, the Eagles finished Pac 7 League play 13-3-2 and earned a share of the league title with Righetti. Because AG took 2 of 3 from Righetti during the regular season, the Eagles earn the league's #1 seed for the CIF playoffs and are assured of a home game in the first round. The CIF brackets will be released on Monday.

Brown scattered 8 hits over 7 innings and allowed 1 run in the final inning. The Eagled turned a big double play in the fourth inning when Chris Davidson threw out Kelton Torres at the plate trying to score from second base on a basehit from Sam Neely. Catcher AJ Cipolla, who applied the tag at the plate, promptly threw out Neely at second base on the play to complete the inning-ending double play.

The Eagles scored once in the third inning when Chris Davidson got caught in a rundown between first and second base long enough to allow Tyler Auerbach to score from third on a delayed steal.

AG carried a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth when they added 2 insurance runs. Paul Ormonde singled to lead off the frame and eventually scored on a Zack Brown grounder. Garrett Ball later scored on a passed wall to cap the Eagles' scoring.

Bryan Kirkpatrick allowed just 6 hits in 6 innings for Atascadero, but was tagged with the loss. He also collected two basehits at the plate for the Hounds.

Ormonde led AG with two hits.

Arroyo Grande and Righetti are co-league champions. The Warriors earn their first piece of a title since 2007, it's the Eagles' first since 2011.

Pioneer Valley came from behind to beat San Luis Obispo 9-6 to clinch the league's fourth and final spot in the playoffs. The Tigers finished third in league at 12-6. Atascadero finished in fifth place and missed a guaranteed berth into the postseason. The Hounds needed to beat AG and have SLO beat PV on Friday to get in the playoffs.
