Eagles come-from-behind to beat Tigers, clinch outright league title

Behind a thrilling third set comeback, the Arroyo Grande High girls volleyball team beat rival San Luis Obispo 3-1 to clinch the outright Pac 7 League title on Tuesday night.

The Tigers, who were co-champions in 2010 and sole league champs in 2011, won the first set 25-16. AG battled back to even it at a set a piece 25-18. SLO built a 24-19 lead in the third set and had five set points, but the Eagles completed a remarkable comeback to win 27-25. AG took the fourth set 25-17 .

The Eagles, who are ranked 5th this week in CIF's Division 2AA, improved to 11-0 in league play and 24-6 overall after wrapping up their first league title since 2009. The Tigers fell to 7-3 in league and 20-7 overall.

Freshman Ashlyn Herlihy led the Eagles with 5 blocks to go with 8 kills. Her play late in the third set helped AG complete its epic comeback and clinch the title. "It feels really good. We haven't had it in a few years and to just earn it is a great sense of accomplishment and I'm very proud of everyone," said Herlihy.

Milissa Morrow, a four year varsity player, led the Eagles with 18 kills and 6 aces. "We were just searching for that championship and now we have it and we still have another game, and we still have CIF and we're not done. We're still going to play really hard," vowed Morrow.

Megan McGuigen added 6 aces, Jade Fuller had 22 digs and Alyssa Koenig added 12 digs and 5 kills for the Pac 7 champion Eagles.

Anna Pedersen, a junior, led the Tigers with 12 kills, while Ariel Becker tallied 10. Erin Good led the Tigers with 20 digs and 4 aces, while setter Maggie Eppright dished out 30 assists.
