Work in the weight room to improve fitness and leg strength all year long paid off in a big way on Tuesday night for the Arroyo Grande High boys volleyball team. The Eagles overcame a 2-0 deficit to win a five game thriller over Saugus in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs. "We had our leg strength in the last two games and they got tired," said Arroyo Grande head coach Laurel Allen.

Arroyo Grande won 18-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-16 and 15-11 to improve to 14-1 on the season. The Eagles are coming off their fifth PAC 7 title after a perfect 8-0 mark in league play.

Taylor Jenish led the Eagles with 14 kills, while Cameron Arnet added 11 kills. Anrdrew Midyett added 5 kills, while Tanner Howard recorded 12 digs. Sophomore setter Jack Empey dished out 45 assists.

The Eagles had lost in the first round the previous two seasons.

Arroyo Grande plays El Toro in the second round on Thursday.
