Behind solid efforts from veterans and underclassmen, the Arroyo Grande High girls volleyball team swept rival San Luis Obispo in a battle of unbeatens to claim sole possession of first place in the Pac 7 League on Thursday night.
The Eagles won 26-24, 25-21 and 25-14 to improve to 5-0 in league play, while the Tigers dropped to 3-1. Freshman Ashlyn Herlihy sent an errant Tiger pass to the floor for one of her six kills to clinch the second set, while senior Danielle Mullery blocked a Tiger hit on match point to complete the sweep.
The match featured two ranked teams because the Tigers were ranked 3rd in CIF's Division 2AA, while AG was tabbed 9th.
Alyssa Koenig led the Eagles with 16 kills, while Millisa Morrow pounded 15 kills. Sophomore setter Alaina Hogeboom recorded 35 assists, while Jade Fuller compiled 21 digs to lead AG.
Last year, San Luis Obispo won both matches with AG to claim its second-straight Pac 7 title. "This year we just came out with a different attitude. We didn't focus on what the other team was doing. We really focused on our side of the court and playing our best and as a team and I think that really helps. We've been waiting for this for so long and all of our hard work has paid off," said Morrow after the match.
The win over their rivals put the Eagles in the driver's seat for their first league title since the program won four in a row from 2006-2009. "It was so much motivation. It just made us want it so much more to beat them because they're our rivals," added Fuller.
The Tigers were led by Ariel Becker, who had 11 kills. Maggie Eppright, who returned from an ankle injury, was credited with 26 assists. Erin Good led the Tigers with 16 digs.
The Tigers will look to return the favor at AG High in their second and final meeting on October 23.
