Ed Arnold pleads not guilty to child pornography charges

Arroyo Grande City Councilman Ed Arnold pleaded not guilty Wednesday to possession of child pornography and using a minor for pornographic purposes. Both are felonies.

Arnold appeared in a San Luis Obispo County courtroom but did not speak to the media. His lawyer, Ilan Funke-Bilu, says Arnold did not show up to last night's city council meeting because of what Funke-Bilu called some valid personal issues, and not because of the new charges. Funke-Bilu says Arnold does not plan on resigning, because he says his client has done nothing wrong.

As for the city council considering asking Arnold to resign, Funke Bilu says it is the "worst kind of political lynch mentality" he's ever seen in the county.

This is just the latest trouble for Arnold. In January, he pleaded not guilty to domestic violence and assault charges after being accused of beating up a 28-year-old woman. During the investigation, police say they found nude photos of underage girls in Arnold's home, along with a video tape showing a naked 16-year-old girl showering in Arnold's bathroom. Police believe that video was taken using a hidden camera. That new evidence led to the charges filed Wednesday.

A preliminary hearing on those charges has been set for May 5.
