It's been around 20 years since the last heritage tree designation in San Luis Obispo, but Tuesday, eight more trees were added.
The Heritage Tree program dedicates large or rare species of trees within the city, so that they can be preserved. Once a tree is accepted into the program, it's assigned a plaque and is added to a pamphlet identifying every Heritage Tree within the city.
Tuesday, eight trees at the Caltrans district office on Higuera Street were dedicated.
"In our pamphlet we have directions to the different sites, and this one would be nice if you want to look at a bunch of varieties of trees because there's eight different trees on this site that are heritage trees," said Ron Combs, urban forester for the city of San Luis Obispo.
Experts say San Luis Obispo has a wide variety of tree species because of it's unique climate.
