An 82-year-old Arroyo Grande man accused of kidnapping an infant pleaded not guilty in a San Luis Obispo County courtroom Thursday morning.
Peter Hewitt was charged with kidnapping, child endangerment and resisting arrest after police arrested him for taking a baby girl away from her mother in the Vons parking lot in Grover Beach earlier this month.
Investigators say the mother, Jennifer Kim, met Hewitt at church and had been staying with him.
Hewitt's lawyer says the man was trying to protect the child.
"He is a recent widower and a person with a kindness for the vulnerable and the needy. He offered his home as a way for her to have a place to live and be out of the weather with this child," said attorney Jeff Stein.
Stein is looking to speak with anyone who knows Kim and is able to provide more information on her background.
Hewitt's arraignment was continued until March 23.
