Empey leads AG water polo to CIF opening win, SLO loses 18-6

Jack Empey scored five goals to lead the Arroyo Grande High boys water polo team into the second round of the CIF Division 4 playoffs. The Eagles won at Redlands East Valley 10-5 on Thursday in a first round game.

The Eagles, who finished runners-up to Righetti in the Pac-7 League, improved to 24-6.

Goalie Chandler Mankins registered 9 saves in the cage for the Eagles.

Arroyo Grande either hosts Troy Saturday in the second round at a time to be determined. Troy beat Downey 14-6 on Thursday.

San Luis Obispo saw its season end on the road. The Tigers lost 18-6 at Cerritos in the first round of the Division 4 playoffs to finish the season 16-12 overall. Nolan Morgan led the way with 2 goals for the Tigers. Kyle Sweasey, Chase Andersen, Emerson Trout and Nick Bea scored one apiece. Goalie Kent Murphy made 14 saves in goal.

San Luis Obispo won its wildcard game on Tuesday for its first playoff win since 2000.
