Engineering students visit local elementary schools

It's National Engineering Week, and to celebrate Cal Poly Engineering students visited local elementary schools. Tuesday the Society of Women Engineers were in Atascadero, Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo, and Arroyo Grande. Wednesday, they spent more time in SLO and also headed to Santa Maria. Rebecca Kandell is a biomedical engineering major at Cal Poly. She told KSBY, "The kids are building gum drop bridges, they were given a limited amount of gumdrops and a limited amount of toothpicks and then were told to build a bridge however they wanted and the afterward they analyze the strengths, weaknesses, and how it relates to engineering in general." The Cal Poly students say their goal is to spark an interest in these fourth-graders through hands-on activities and fun demonstrations.
