Exclusive: High school principals to vote in March on releaguing proposals

Principals of high schools in San Luis Obispo and Northern Santa Barbara Counties will vote on proposed changes to athletic leagues in March. Multiple athletic directors confirmed with KSBY Sports they approved two proposals, including one that is specific only to football, at their meeting earlier this month.

If passed by a majority of the principals, the new leagues would go into effect for the 2014-15 school year.

The first would establish a league with eight San Luis Obispo County schools and another league with the eight schools from Northern Santa Barbara County.

Currently, schools from both counties are in the Pac 7 and Los Padres Leagues. The Pac 7 features Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, Paso Robles, Pioneer Valley Righetti, St. Joseph and San Luis Obispo High Schools. The Los Padres League includes Cabrillo, Lompoc, Morro Bay, Nipomo, Santa Maria, Santa Ynez and Templeton. With the additions of Mission Prep and Orcutt Academy, there will be sixteen high schools in the two leagues.

The proposed leagues for all sports, except football would be as followed.
League 1 League 2
Arroyo Grande Cabrillo
Atascadero Lompoc
Mission Prep Orcutt Academy
Morro Bay Pioneer Valley
Nipomo Righetti
Paso Robles Santa Maria
San Luis Obispo Santa Ynez
Templeton St. Joseph

The second proposal calls for four leagues, each with four schools, for football only.

League 1 League 2
Arroyo Grande Mission Prep
Atascadero Morro Bay
Paso Robles Nipomo
San Luis Obispo Templeton

League 3 League 4
Cabrillo Lompoc
Orcutt Academy Pioneer Valley
Santa Maria Righetti
Santa Ynez St. Joseph

According to the CIF guidelines, the top two teams in each proposed four school league automatically qualify for the CIF playoffs.
